Headquartered in Brisbane, Credit Union Australia was founded in 1946 and was formerly known as Queensland Postal Co-operative Credit Union. For the financial year ended June 30, 2021, it reported $18.8 billion in total assets, $13.5 billion in loans, $11.3 billion in deposits, and $1.1 billion in members' funds. Net profit after tax was $49.1 million.

In June 2021, Credit Union of Australia Ltd changed its business name to Great Southern Bank.
