Credit Unions in New South Wales

Here is a list of current and previous credit unions in New South Wales (NSW), a state on the east coast of Australia. Sydney is the capital of New South Wales and the largest city in Australia, with a population of over 5.1 million.

Australian Defence Credit Union (ADCU), headquartered in Sydney, was established in 1959. The company changed its name to Australian Military Bank Ltd in 2015.

Bananacoast Community Credit Union was one of the largest credit unions in New South Wales, with $1.7 billion in assets, $1.5 billion in deposits, and $1.4 billion in loans. It merged with P&N Bank in 2019 and continues to operate as BCU brand only.

Bankstown City Credit Union changed its name to Bankstown City Unity Bank in 2017.

Berrima District Credit Union trades as BDCU Alliance Bank. It was established in 1963 and serves over 14,000 members across the Southern Highlands and Tablelands of NSW, with branches in Bowral, Goulburn, Mittagong and Moss Vale.

Broken Hill Community Credit Union

CAPE Credit Union Limited – It was acquired by Community First Credit Union in 2018.

Central West Credit Union, based in Parkes, is a deposit taking institution regulated by Australian Prudential Regulatory Authority (APRA). As of March 2021, it had more than 10,000 members.

Coastline Credit Union Ltd – A customer-owned organization with over 16,300 members and $500 million in assets. Any Australian resident can become a member of Credit Union.

Community Alliance Credit Union changed its name to Illawarra Credit Union Ltd in 2018.

Community First Credit Union Ltd – An Australian financial institution headquartered in Sydney.

Community Mutual Ltd (previously New England Credit Union) was a trading name of Regional Australia Bank until May 2018.

Comtax Credit Union, based in Blacktown, merged with Security Credit Union in 2008 to form Allied Members Credit Union.

Country First Credit Union, established in 1963, merged with Beyond Bank Australia in 2016.

Encompass Credit Union

Family First Credit Union – A financial co-operative founded in 1967. Based in Lithgow, it serves about 8,000 members and has $160 million in assets. Colin Lenton is Chair of the Board.

First Choice Credit Union Ltd, established in 1970, offers products and services to all residents of New South Wales.

Gateway Credit Union Ltd, established in 1955, was one of the leading credit unions in Australia, with assets of $1.1 billion. It changed its name to Gateway Bank in March 2018.

Holiday Coast Credit Union – Based in Wauchope, HCCU was a financial co-operative providing personal and business banking services to more than 25,000 members in the north-east of New South Wales. In July 2019, it merged with Regional Australia Bank.

Horizon Credit Union Ltd, established in 1964, trades as Horizon Bank since September 2019.

Hunter United Employees' Credit Union, headquartered in Broadmeadow, offered home, personal and car loans, green loans, credit cards, savings and transaction accounts, superannuation, pension and investment accounts, insurance and internet banking. In May 2020, Hunter United merged with IMB Bank.

Illawarra Credit Union Ltd was previously known as Community Alliance Credit Union Ltd.

Intech Credit Union, located in St Leonards, a suburb on the North Shore of Sydney, merged with Bank Australia in January 2017 and changed its name to Intech Bank. Intech have been serving Telstra and IBM staff and all Australian technology employees for over 50 years.

Laboratories Credit Union

Lysaght Credit Union Ltd, established in 1966, merged with Horizon Bank in April 2021.

Macarthur Credit Union Ltd, founded in 1971 by local miners and truck drivers, provides services to more than 12,000 members through four branch locations in Camden, Narellan, Tahmoor and Picton.

Macquarie Credit Union

Maritime, Mining & Power Credit Union was established in 1970 and changed its name to Unity Bank Limited in March 2017.

My Credit Union merged with Beyond Bank Australia in December 2017.

Police Credit Union (PCU), founded in 1964, changed its name to Police Bank Ltd in December 2012.

Northern Inland Credit Union Ltd was incorporated in 1970 and is headquartered in Tamworth.

Orange Credit Union was established in 1964 and provides personal banking services to people in the Orange area. For the financial year ended 30 June 2020, the company reported $202 million in members’ deposits.

Qantas Credit Union, founded in 1959, was re-branded to Qudos Bank in 2016.

Quay Credit Union merged with G&C Mutual Bank in 2016.

Select Encompass Credit Union – Changed its name to Endeavour Mutual Bank in February 2018.

Sydney Credit Union Ltd, established in 1963, employed over 100 people and served over 45,000 members. On October 1, 2019, it merged with Endeavour Mutual Bank to form Australian Mutual Bank.

Teachers Credit Union, established in 1966, changed its name to Teachers Mutual Bank Limited in 2012.

Telstra Credit Union, established in 1962, merged with Intech Credit Union in 2005.

Transport Mutual Credit Union Ltd was founded in 1964 as Main Roads Staff Credit Union.

Other Credit Unions in New South Wales

Allied Members Credit Union merged with Sydney Credit Union in 2014.

Broadway Credit Union Ltd, established in 1963, was deregistered and liquidated in 2010.

Capital Credit Union Limited, founded in 1968, was acquired by Industries Mutual Credit Union in 2008.

Companion Credit Union Limited was acquired by Community CPS Australia Ltd in 2010.

Central Coast Credit Union (formerly Wyong Council Credit Union) merged with Unity Bank in 2018 and changed its name to Central Coast Unity Bank.

CSR and Rinker Employees Credit Union Ltd, founded in 1956, was acquired by Select Credit Union Limited in 2009.

Eurobodalla Credit Union Ltd merged with Horizon Credit Union in 2009.

Fire Brigades Employees' Credit Union (FBECU), founded in 1968, had around 7,500 members and $220 million in assets. It merged with Teachers Mutual Bank in 2016.

Gosford City Credit Union Ltd joined Maritime, Mining & Power Credit Union (MMPCU) in July 2010.

H.M.C. Staff Credit Union Ltd, founded in 1962, merged with Police Department Employees Credit Union in 2009.

Hunter Mutual Limited, established in 1968, was acquired by New England Credit Union Limited in 2010.

Karpaty Ukrainian Credit Union, founded in 1971, merged with Sydney Credit Union (SCU) in 2010.

Industries Mutual Credit Union Ltd merged with Resources Credit Union in 2011.

Manly Warringah Credit Union Ltd, founded in 1965, merged with Community First Credit Union in 2015.

MemberFirst Credit Union Limited, established in 1963, merged into Select Credit Union Ltd in 2012.

Nova Credit Union Limited, established in 1964, changed its name to Nova Mutual Limited.

Newcom Colliery Employees Credit Union, founded in 1966, joined Maritime, Mining & Power Credit Union in May 2015.

Phoenix (N.S.W.) Credit Union Ltd, founded in 1969, merged with Maitland Mutual Building Society in 2011.

Resources Credit Union Limited merged with Industries Mutual CU.

R.T.A. Staff Credit Union Limited, established in 1964, changed its name to Transport Mutual Credit Union Limited in 2012.

Security Credit Union Limited, founded in 1964, merged with Sydney Credit Union (SCU).

Shell Employees' Credit Union joined Maritime, Mining & Power Credit Union in April 2016.

Shoalhaven Community Credit Union

SGE Credit Union Limited, founded in 1959, changed name to G&C Mutual Bank in 2014.

Sutherland Credit Union Ltd, founded in 1971, merged with IMB Bank in July 2016.

Sutherland Shire Council Employees' Credit Union merged with Sydney Credit Union Limited in 2009.

TAFE and Community Credit Union, founded in 1957, merged with NSW Teachers Credit Union in 2008.

Tartan Credit Union Limited, founded in 1963, merged with Select Credit Union Limited in 2013.

The Police Department Employees' Credit Union

Wyong Council Credit Union Ltd (formerly known as Wyong Shire Council Employees' Credit Union) was established in 1965. In 2012, it changed its name to Wyong Shire Credit Union. In 2016, it was rebranded as Central Coast Credit Union (CCCU), which became a division of Unity Bank in December 2018.

Wagga Mutual Credit Union Ltd, established in 1964, was acquired by Community CPS Australia Limited in 2014.
