Heritage Building Society Limited (HBSL) was the largest building society in Australia and one of the best performing financial institutions. The company was formed in 1981 by the merger of Toowoomba Permanent Building Society (est. 1875) and the Darling Downs Building Society (est. 1897). With about 690 full time employees, it had 130 retail outlets across Queensland as well as provided broker services in New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia. In 2009, Heritage passed the $7 billion mark in assets under management. Headquartered in Toowoomba, the company mainly operates in the Darling Downs geographical area. For the year ended 30 June 2011, Heritage’s consolidated total assets, deposits and loans amounted to $8.1 billion, $7.4 billion and $6.5 billion, respectively. Net profit after income tax was $32 million. Heritage scored a customer satisfaction rating of 90% for customers who considered the Society as their main financial institution.
In December 2011, Heritage Building Society changed its name to Heritage Bank Ltd.
